Questions that inspire reflection…..
….Stories that make THE POINT!"
THE STORY

Throughout history, well known, lesser known, famous or infamous quotes and the stories that
inspired them... have also inspired us, provided us with thought provoking reflection, and at times
altered our attitudes and beliefs.
Although we may or may not know where the quote came from, the accuracy or who said it, we still
attach our own meaning or relevance to what we are hearing.
Hopefully, the paraphrased story below will inspire you and provide you with some useful quotes
that you can attach your own relevant meaning to.
The Story: April 14th, 1970, as the spacecraft Apollo XIII cruised along 205,000 miles above earth, everything
seemed to be "by the book and on track" for the mission. That is, until these words pierced the immense void of
space, "Houston, we have a problem."
Back at mission control, flight director Gene Kranz listened intently as the astronauts of Apollo XIII continued a
steady stream of frightening updates. “Houston, we have a lot of thruster activity. We have multiple caution and
warning alarms.
As flight director Gene Kranz absorbed all of the intense shouting amidst the chaos at mission control he stepped
back and said, “Ok, quiet down, quiet down, let’s stay cool". “Now,” and he paused with a deafening silence and
said, “What have we got on the spacecraft that’s good?”
This simple statement brought chaos under control and forced the engineers to focus on the problems one at
time, and more importantly, despite the clear impending disaster, forced everyone to focus on what was still
working right — what they had on the spacecraft that was good.
The courage, faith, and ingenuity dramatized in the movie about the Apollo XIII mission, and paraphrased in this
synopsis, truly reflect the power of figuring out what is right first, and then tackling the problems one at time.
As you pursue your hopes, dreams, and aspirations, and no doubt have to overcome obstacles and find a way
around road blocks, don’t forget to take a step back, and remember “What have we got on the spacecraft
that’s good?”
Starting with your desires, talents, and skills, and most importantly the things you are doing right - right now -
you will achieve the success you desire!
"What have we got
on the spacecraft
that's good?"
THE POINT!
Anyone can be a skeptic or pessimist and list the problems, pitfalls, and the potential for failure. But can you list what is right about your hopes, plans, and dreams, as well as those of your family and friends?
