the peanut farmTM
As the story goes...
An associate was taking a vacation trip to the Florida Keys. Leaving from the North - with a full two
weeks off - he decided to take the back roads so he could avoid all franchise-laden freeways until he
reached the causeway. As he tells the story, he was cruising along somewhere deep in the south
and enjoying the country flavor when he began to see signs "Stop at "the peanut farm" -
only 10 miles ahead.
Deciding he needed a break and some snacks, he began to slow down to watch for the roadside
stand. Sure enough as he drove closer, in the distance he could see a gravel road leading to a
variety of old farm buildings: "The Peanut Farm." branded into an old wooden board. As he
turned into the driveway he thought to himself that there was no way these decrepit, worn-out stands
would sell sodas or snacks (though maybe peanuts). As he carefully maneuvered the road he
became intrigued as he saw a variety of items hanging from all of the buildings and lean twos, but
he could not make out what they were.
As he parked his car he noticed a stately gentleman not much older than himself smiling and
offering a cold drink with an upraised hand, and motioning for him to come and sit in one of the very
unique rocking chairs on the porch, unique because as he drew closer he realized that the chairs
were made entirely of peanuts.
As he approached the stand he still wondered exactly what this place was: A store? A farm? A
successful business? Regardless of what it was, everything, literally everything, was made from
peanuts : Coffee mugs, plates, silly toys, knick knacks, the list went on and on.
As he joined the gentleman on the porch and graciously accepted the cold drink he thought to
himself, this must be "The Twilight Zone". There is nothing in this store that is not made of
peanuts.
After several hours of relaxed conversation, this associate learned that the gentleman was an
engineer who had had, throughout his entire life, a never-ending passion for peanuts. As it turned
out he was born near a peanut farm, and no matter where his career had taken him he never let go
of this passion; so when he retired he decided to turn his passion into his life. He reveled as he told
stories of starting his peanut business and the fun of creating his own brand of unique products.
He was truly, completely fulfilled. To use his words, he had found himself at the epitome of self
actualization - being who he was meant to be and doing what he was meant to do.
The man who had seen all of this was an associate of mine, and as he told me this story I watched
his eyes, and I realized I had never seen eyes filled with more passion and wonder as one who
bears witness to another doing what they love. Passion and enthusiasm filled his heart, and mine.
Many years have passed since I first heard this story, but its message is still as clear and
meaningful today. Realizing that most people cannot retire to their passion and earn an income
from it, "the peanut farm" was born from the idea that all people deserve to have an opportunity
to do what they love, and maybe what they were born to do. "The Peanut Farm" can be your
catalyst for getting your product off the ground. The possibilities are endless. And even though the
old saying goes, "I don't work for peanuts", sign up now and you will enjoy working for your peanuts.
